When the skin loses its elasticity, stretch marks will form. The most common causes for stretch marks are pregnancy or drastic weight changes. Other times, stretch marks can be genetic or be a product of a certain adrenal gland condition such as Cushing’s syndrome. While there is no complete prevention of stretch marks, there are certain things you can do to help increase your chances of avoiding them. Here are some things you should do with your diet as a way to prevent your chances for stretch marks.
- Stay hydrated by drinking water. People think that by drinking any juice or soda is a way to stay hydrated. However, you need to drink water in its pure form to stay hydrated and keep the skin supple and soft. If you must get in your favorite beverages, make sure to keep a balance and not to overload on the caffeine, which is another ingredient believed to heighten your chances of getting stretch marks. Here is a simple rule to follow, drink as much or preferably more cups of water than you would your favorite drinks.
- Be conscious of what you are eating. While keeping a healthy diet is overall important to keep a healthy body and a stable weight, eating right is another way to make sure you prevent your chances for stretch marks. Incorporating nutrient dense foods allows you to feed your skin and keep it healthy. Nutrients such as zinc, vitamin A, vitamin D, and vitamin E all play an essential role in improving the condition of your skin. So make sure you have a diet that is rich in fruit, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. If you feel you are not getting your daily dosage of vitamins and minerals, make sure to take a multi-vitamin daily.
- Monitor how you eat. Remember that stretch marks can occur if you gain weight too quickly. This means you will want to keep track of your diet and stay moderately healthy with your meal choices. Processed foods or foods with high fat and refined sugars and carbohydrates should not be had on a regular basis. This doesn’t mean you can’t splurge once in a while but it means those splurges should not be often. If you happen to be pregnant or have noticed some weight gain, you can always speak with your doctor to work out a food plan and diet that will accommodate your needs but still be healthy.
- Moisturize your skin. This doesn’t have anything to do with food but it should be something you should do to avoid stretch marks. Keep your skin soft and hydrated by applying your favorite moisturizer. Whether it’s a cream or lotion, make sure it has nourishing properties and ingredients that will keep your skin in good condition. Moisturizers and lotions do not decrease your chances of getting stretch marks, but they do help to alleviate any itching and the massaging in of the lotion will help to improve blood flow to areas of your body.
